The beautiful Greenwing
is said to be the largest of the common Macaws. With its incredible
coloration it is easy to see why they are so popular. The red
feather trails on the face patch, and the green on the wings seem to
make this bird look more like a work of art than a parrot. These
birds are said to be mechanically inclined, known to take
apart cages if they wish, so its best to house them in cages
designed for the known escape artist. One should be prepared to
provide the Greenwing with lots of exercise and mental stimulation - a bored bird is an unhappy bird.
Also, you should keep in
mind that this is a cavity nester, and you will need to supply lots
of chewable wood took keep that massive beak busy. Greenwings have
big voices to go with their big bodies, and are known to be good
talkers. Don't underestimate their screams though, they are more
than capable of making their wishes known, to you and your
neighbours. All too often these majestic birds
are bought as cage ornaments, which leads to destructive violent
birds. No bird should be treated that way, and the Greenwing is one
of the parrots who need lots of hands on time in order to maintain a
healthy relationship with their companion people.
